Taranto Province
The province of Taranto covers just less than 1,000 square miles fronting the Ionian sea, tucked into the instep of Italy's boot, centered around the harbour and city of the same name. Taranto The coastal plain stretches inland to the hills and plateau called the Murge which rises to over 1,500 feet and well worth exploring with all the ancient villages and fantastic scenery.

Around and in Tarento city and its magnificent harbour there is some heavy industry including chemical, steel, glass and ceramics, but away from there agriculture is king, apart from a few coastal marinas and towns which attract large numbers of tourists.

There is an airport at Tarento but it is currently only used for military purposes, so the nearest civilian one is in Brindisi a short drive across the peninsular by dual carriageway.

There are lots of places of interest and to visit for the tourist, from cave villages, roman remains like aquaducts, villas, temples, norman towers and castles, plus all the local museums displaying their finds.
